Simple Syrup Basics

Sugarcane syrup with water

This delicious and easy recipe for simple cane sugar syrup is made with just two ingredients and is ready in minutes! Homemade simple syrup is perfect for coffee drinks, refreshing summer drinks, cocktails, and mocktails.

Learn how to make simple syrup with cane sugar and water or you can use regular granulated white sugar if you prefer.

Makes 1 1/2 cups or 12 oz syrup

• 1 cup organic granulated cane sugar

• 1 cup filtered water

1. In a small saucepan, stir together sugar and water over medium high heat.

2. Bring to a low boil, reduce heat to medium low.

3. Simmer 12 minutes, or until syrup is slightly thickened. Remove from heat.

4. Allow to cool, store in a sealed container in the fridge until ready to use.


Sugar free drink

Makes 1 cup or 8 ounces of syrup

• ¼ cup Lakanto Monkfruit Sweetener with Erythritol (Classic or Gold), or Xylitol

• ½ cup filtered water

• 1/16 teaspoon (or a pinch) xanthan gum

1. In a small saucepan, stir together the sweetener and water over medium-high heat.

2. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat to medium and simmer until the sweetener is completely dissolved.

3. Whisk in the xanthan gum until completely dissolved. Simmer for an additional minute, then remove from heat.

4. Allow to cool to room temperature. Use immediately as the syrup will crystallize again In the refrigerator.


Rose Syrup

• 1 cup organic granulated cane sugar

• 1 cup filtered water

• 1/2 cup dried rose petals

Follow basic syrup instructions to step 3.

1. Stir in rose petals, cover syrup, and simmer for 10 minutes.

2. Remove syrup from heat and let steep for an additional 30 minutes.

3. Strain syrup through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove petals.

Allow syrup to cool, then place in a covered container until ready to use.


Lavender Syrup

• 1 cup organic granulated cane sugar

• 1 cup filtered water

• 4 tablespoons dried lavender flowers

Follow basic syrup instructions up to step 3.

1. Stir in lavender flowers, cover, and let steep for 20 minutes.

2. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove flowers.

3. Let cool, then place in a covered bowl until ready to use.


Black Pepper Syrup

• 1 cup organic granulated cane sugar

• 1 cup filtered water

• 1/4 cup ground black pepper

Follow basic syrup instructions to step 3.

1. Add peppercorns, cover and let steep for 30 minutes.

2. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove peppercorns.

3. Let cool, then place in a covered bowl until ready to use.


Citrus Syrup

• 1/2 cup organic granulated cane sugar

• 1/2 cup citrus juice (any kind)

• Zest of 1 citrus fruit (use a vegetable peeler)

1. Combine sugar and fruit juice in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

2. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until syrup thickens slightly, about 10-12 minutes.

3. Remove from heat. Stir in zest and let steep for about 20 minutes.

Remove zest from syrup or drain and refrigerate until ready to use.


Hot Jalapeno Drink

• 1 cup organic granulated cane sugar

• 1 cup filtered water

• 1 jalapeño or habanero pepper, roughly

Follow basic syrup instructions to step 3.

1. Stir in the chiles, cover and let steep for 30 minutes.

2. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove the peppers.

3. Let cool, then place in a covered bowl until ready to use
